Dr. Ling & Dr. Wong have specialized training in oral cancer screening. Dr. Ling was also the recipient of an Honors Award at NYU Dental School in Oral Medicine.   Newport Healthy Smiles office is one of only 25 Dental offices in the entire orange county of California offering this specialized service for oral cancer screening.

Dr. Ling and Dr. Wong are pleased to offer an optional service to our patients in providing VELscope oral cancer screening.  Since many oral cancers are invisible to the naked eye---Dr Ling and Dr. Wong have learned the latest technology developed by LED Dental, Inc that uses a microscope and a staining procedure that allows direct visualization of human tissue fluorescence and the changes in fluorescence that occur when abnormal tissue is present.

How does it work:

Dr. Ling and Dr. Wong will first do a visual and manual palpation oral exam to the tongue and mouth area and then apply a VELscope blue excitation light into your mouth area.  They will look through the microscope in the Handpiece.  The fluorescent stain will be absorbed differently with abnormal tissue as shown below.  The importance here is that even tissue that may have looked fine to the naked eye may have early signs of cancer that can't be detected without this new technology.
